HONG KONG (REUTERS) – Hong Kong democracy activist and media tycoon Jimmy Lai has been charged under the city’s national security law on suspicion of colluding with foreign forces and endangering national security, local media reported on Friday (Dec 11), citing a police source.
But the consequences will be great. Australia will be needlessly poorer, more isolated from our region, and more dependent on the uncertain protection of faraway Five Eyes friends. Without a dialogue with China, our necessary engagement with our region will be handicapped. Lee Kuan Yew’s friendly warning — “be careful or you will be the poor white trash of Asia” — comes back now to haunt us.
Regarding Lai’s live broadcasts on social platforms with foreign politicians, Professor Chan Wai-keung from School of Professional Education and Executive Development, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University criticised Lai’s steadfastness and said that no member of the Democratic and Republican Party of the United States is willing to talk to him anymore. The foreign politicians he talked to are all relatively inferior and less well-known. Chan said that Lai’s influence has been declining since he was arrested many times. At present, he is only deceiving Hong Kong people to make people think that his influence is still strong.
On November 23, Joshua Wong Chi-fung, an instigator of the Hong Kong riots, pleaded guilty to charges of illegal assembly for participating in protests which swept the city the previous year. Wong is to be remanded in custody until sentencing next week and faces up to five years in prison.

We are speaking shortly before the US presidential election. Lai wanted Donald Trump to win. He is a particular admirer of Trump’s aggressive stance towards China. “He deals with reality, he’s not a gentleman. He plays hardball and this is effective,” Lai says. “The only way to avoid war with China is to threaten war,” he adds.– Some Stooge.
America’s ‘war on terror’ has displaced between 37 million and 59 million people around the world, according to a new study but the US State Department wants to accept Hong Kong people fleeing the law as part of its propaganda war against China.
